Centenary Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide

The commemoration will be held on Friday 24th April at the Sydney Town Hall at 7.00 pm.

It is therefore the duty of every Armenian to make an effort and attend this most sacred event in the Armenian Calendar, as it marks the passing of 100 years of the terrible calamity that befell the Armenian nation, where 1.500.000 million of our people perished at the hands of the barbarous Ottoman government of 1915.  It is our sacred duty to attend.

Armenian liturgical mass at St Mary’s Cathedral

An Armenian liturgical Holy Mass will be jointly celebrated by all the Armenian Churches in Sydney at St. Mary’s Cathedral on 2nd May 2015 at 11.00am for the souls of the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

Once again we stress the importance of attending this Holy Mass to pray for the souls of our ancestors who perished, whilst being subjected to the most inhumane and atrocious methods of torture and humiliation, a heinous crime perpetrated by the Ottoman government of the day.

This Special Mass will be televised so that the general public and the world can see and realize and become aware of the calamity that was inflicted upon our forefathers in 1915.

Armenia is a state that inspires hope:
Thorbjørn Jagland

Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland

Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland  speaking at the global forum “Against the Crime of Genocide” in Armenian capital Yerevan - 22/04/2015 (Public Radio of Armenia)

Speaking about the Armenian Genocide, Thorbjorn Jagland said “what was committed against the Armenian people hundred years ago was the loss of not only Armenians but also the entire world.”

“I am sad, I am thinking about those people who lost their lives during that tragedy. I am excited to be here. I am from Fridtjof Nansen’s country, and I am even more excited in this connection, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, stated at the International Social and Political Global Forum against the Crime of Genocide.

He noted that one hundred years ago the Armenians were brutally killed, and thousands of Armenians were driven to poverty. “This was not only the loss of the Armenians, but the loss of the world,” he said.

“To prevent new tragedies, we should sympathize with those who suffered and paid with their lives,” Jagland said.

In his words, politics hampers sympathy. “All states have the responsibility to prevent violations of rights against innocent people. First of all, it is the states that have the duty to prevent ethnic cleansings and the international organizations should support them.”

“Armenia is a state that inspires hope. You have been able to turn your suffering into strength, and the entire world can see it this week,” Mr. Jagland stressed.

How Komitas preserved Armenian folk music
In the 1990s, the duduk found its way into movie soundtracks, radio playlists and record collections of the west. Yet as Cara Rosehope writes, the music of Armenia’s national instrument might never have survived the Armenian genocide were it not for Komitas—a priest, musician, composer and so much more.

A brief annotation The Armenian Genocide was administered by Turkey’s ruling circles during the First World War and the years subsequent. During 1915 about 800 Armenian intellectuals were arrested in Constantinople, more Armenian people were slaughtered and deported. Over 1,5 million Armenians were killed through the Genocide. Western Armenia was deprived of the native population. A massive damage was inflicted to the Armenians’ material and spiritual achievements. About 800 thousand Armenians were forced to migrate and scatter around the world settling in the countries where afterwards memorials to the victims of the Genocide were erected.

Let us this time to walk in the footsteps of Jesus who died on our behalf on the cross, and we believe that there is no other better way in showing Him that we appreciate what he did for us, and in so doing we may be able to prepare ourselves for a truly Holy Easter.

Reconciliation - After all it is the month of lent and what a better opportunity for us all to make our peace with our God, our so called enemies, our neighbours, our friends; and how can we achieve that without opening our hearts and ask for forgiveness for all our sins from God; for there is no one amongst us without sin; and how can we do this? Yes my friend, we can do this by the simple act of confession to your priest who is the representative of our Lord Jesus Christ on this earth.

During the month of lent Fr. Parsegh will be available everyday to hear your confessions, and all you have to do is turn up to open up your hearts.

February 2008 - see Newsletter for more details

First Holy Communion - The 2008 first Holy Communion ceremony and mass will be held in April. Fr Parsegh has already commenced preparing the young so that they fully understand the meaning of the most holy sacrament, and so that they become worthy to receive the body and blood of Jesus our Saviour.

Holy Mass in English - Yes, Fr. Parsegh and his Church Council have decided to introduce Holy Mass in the English Language in our Parish.

Starting March 9th the Holy mass will said in the English language, that is every second Sunday of the month. This decision has been taken to ensure that our many young boys and girls who are not conversant in the Armenian language, can still attend Mass (in the Armenian rite with some beautiful traditional hymns), in our church.  We cannot stress the importance of young blood in our church; the young are the future for our Parish and Church, without them we are doomed, there will be no one around to take over from the old generation, and if we as parents cannot get the message across to them, then let us ask ourselves, who will?

So please remember the date and let us pray to our Lord, to make the young hear our call.

Sunday School - With great pleasure, we announce the commencement of our Sunday school for Kiddies; albeit in small numbers but we are confident the numbers will grow in due course; those who have missed our previous announcements can contact Fr. Parsegh to enrol in these classes; it is a great opportunity to introduce our young to the Armenian language, religion and other activities. As we have mentioned in our previous bulletins, the classes will be given during Holy Mass, which means that the parents can attend Mass while their children are being taught language and religion.  So for your children’s sake and our community’s sake do not neglect this opportunity, because these children are our future without them the future of our parish and community is indeed grim and its long-term survival would be seriously in doubt.

Sunday school
Sunday 9th December we will commence the Sunday school classes for children between 6- 12 years old.

The classes will be given in the church hall whilst the Holy mass is being said. All our parishioners and friends are welcome to bring their children within the abovementioned age group.

This is a great opportunity for us to saw the seeds of the Armenian culture and religion in our young. Our children are our investment for the future.

Thank you for the volunteer teaching staff - Mr & Mrs Robert Hazari and Miss Laura Baghdisar, for their kind and generous spirit.
